Notes from October 30, 2019 Meeting
Dear Everybody,
There was a lot of talk about tears today – not because of any kind of tragedy, but because Dr. Beth Deemer was our speaker. We learned that October is Contact Lens Safety Month, and we discussed the necessity for maintaining good hygiene practices with all contact lenses. (No reusing dirty solution!) We also discussed eye drops, and the kinds that are good for particular eye conditions. One revelation that was news to many of us is that the top layer of tears in the eye is composed of oil, and that is what keeps tears from evaporating too quickly. A good way to stimulate oil production, especially if you have dry eye, is to use hot compresses.
Dr. Deemer’s unofficial motto is “Don’t touch your eyes!” She said that nothing good ever comes from rubbing your eyes or putting your fingers near them. No matter how tempting it might be to dig your knuckles into allergy itchy eyes – don’t do it! Dr. Deemer also distributed eyeglass cleaner and cloths, which were very much appreciated by everybody.
It was also announced that Westbrook Vision Center is having their Autumn Eyewear Event on November 2nd between 8:00 a.m. and 12 noon with 30% to 50% off on Select Frames, including Jimmy Choo, Juicy Couture, Ray Ban, Coach, Versace, Jimmy Crystal, Ann Taylor, BCBG, Tommy Hilfiger and MANY more. All complete pairs of glasses get 50% off on lenses including suns and progressives. Food and refreshments will be served. This promotion cannot be combined with any other discounts or vision insurance. Discounts are subject to inventory on-hand. Call 623-256-0400 for details.
Next week (November 6), Brooke Schiavone is our member speaker, and will also sponsor the monthly raffle. We thank her for signing up, despite her rigorous dance mom and work schedule.
Next Wednesday is also the Sons of The American Legion chicken fried steak dinner, with Modern Woodmen, at 9847 W. Desert Cove, Peoria 85345. The Sons of The American Legion put this on every month, and November’s dinner is being joined by Modern Woodmen. Justin and Cathy Smitch will be on hand to make the evening special, and the dinner is available for just $5 a person from 5-7 p.m. Adult beverages are available for an additional cost.
Tomorrow is Halloween, so make sure you have your trick-or-treat strategies planned and all your goblins in a row.
Have a great week!
All the best,
Jody Serey
