Notes from September 18, 2019 Meeting

Dear Everybody,

We were missing some folks, but we soldiered on. I hope that those of you who were MIA are okay and that we will see you soon.

We had a recap of last week’s Pass It On Day at The Tulip Tree, and agreed that it had been a great success. Publicity for this year’s event was much trickier than in years past, but we ended up having excellent broadcast coverage. Oddly enough, there wasn’t a single printed word. Regardless – the day went very, very well.

Susan Fitzgerald reported that the Quiet Room for Phoenix 911 operators was dedicated this week – and reported widely on the news. Her Rotary club came up with the idea and helped make it a reality. Police Chief Jeri Williams and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego were on hand for the ceremony. The room is intended as a place for emergency dispatchers to decompress.

Susan also reminded us that the Pursuing Peace Conference is this Friday, and there is still time to register. The conference is being held at the Rio Visa Community Center, 8866 W. Thunderbird. Additional information and a link to register can be found at https://rotaryclubofsurprise.com/event/pursuing-peace-conference.

Dr. Misty reported that her visit to Hawaii was great, although the devastation on the Big Island was startling. It has been reduced to a burnt cinder in many places because of the lava flow that reached it. However, other parts of Hawaii were beautiful, and she said she wasn’t all that eager to return home.

Judy Haenel reported that she is still working on the wedding from hell. The couple is nice. Their relatives are even pleasant. The Biltmore is their venue, and it has been a nightmare to try to deal with them. Justin Smitch, Cathy’s husband, was able to provide nametags for Judy’s employees so they can be admitted to the ceremony site. A bit of advice – avoid the Biltmore unless somebody is taking you out to dinner and the car is being valet parked. Stay on this side of town.

Marie DeAngelis gave us additional insight into ways people are scammed, and what to watch out for. We have asked Marie to reprise her earlier presentation that we postponed because there were too many empty seats in the room. Marie will be presenting again in the near future.

Here are the speakers and raffle sponsors that are scheduled through the end of the year. There are still dates open if you would like to present this calendar year. The other half of the equation is showing up when there is a member speaker scheduled or a raffle scheduled. Few things are as disheartening than preparing material, gathering up samples or handouts, and being greeted by crickets in the meeting room.

UPCOMING NWN EVENTS:
September 25: Susan Riedel, Final Wishes
October 2: Lupe Encinas, member speaker
October 2: Judy Haenel, monthly raffle sponsor
November 6: Brooke Schiavone, monthly raffle sponsor
November 6: Brooke Schiavone, member speaker

We are heading into the final quarter of the year. Let’s make it a really great one.

Best wishes,
Jody Serey
