Notes from March 27, 2019 Meeting

Dear Everybody,

We had a lively and varied discussion on a variety of topics. Because we tend to speak by free association, I will present the gist of what we said in the approximate order it was said. We are women. We don’t need no stinkin’ agenda!

At any rate, Robin announced that Vickie had won a restaurant gift card in the raffle for the veterans’ chamber. She also gave a thank you to Wendy for her new hair, and said it was in time for the family pictures that Cathy will be taking when Robin’s family is together. She mentioned, too, that she will be gone next week.

Judy Haenel talked about the Memorial Day flowers event, which may not occur if the cemetery is not welcoming. The cemetery officials last year were less than cordial. Regardless, if does occur, the event will be scaled back. The woman who supposedly made the major donation last year of $10,000 was actually a scam artist, and the money was smoke and mirrors. So the general juju of the flowers event is not great. A number of us have friends and relatives buried at the National Cemetery, so we are urged to make sure that one way or the other, we honor them on Memorial Day, with or without an official event.

Susan Riedel reminded us that on Wednesday, April 3 from 5 until 7, the Sons of the American Legion will hold its chicken fried steak dinner. Modern Woodmen will be working with Justin and Cathy Smitch to put on the event, and will contribute the proceeds to the American Legion. The dinner is $7 per attendee and includes total comfort food of chicken fried stead, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn or green beans, pineapple, and a roll. For more information or to give Susan a nose count, call 602-978-1005.

Ami asked for some input about the pros and cons of installing solar panels. Audrey indicated that if the solar panels are owned by a seller and not leased, they can be an asset. If the solar panels are leased, then a potential buyer has to qualify for an additional payment, and the presence of leased solar panels can be a deal breaker for a potential buyer. We also talked about the legal headaches of trying to prove liability, get repairs made, etc. We also said some unkind things about our utility companies, and then the soft voice of Cathy Smitch stated that her son works for APS. We exempted Cathy’s son from our critical remarks.

Brooke said that lab grown diamonds do not hold their value, and the market was flooded with them for awhile. Brooke is in the middle of Dance Mom Competition Hell, so wish her luck as she rushes from place to place with her talented daughter.

We related our near death experiences with the current crop of idiotic drivers populating the Valley, and we cautioned each other to be on the alert for traffic demons. We also expressed deep concern for the physical safety of our law enforcement officers.

A reminder was given that dues are only being calculated back to the beginning of 2019. We are beginning our second quarter next week. Dues are $25 a quarter. If you pay by cash or check, we will hand carry the payments to the bank.

Have a wonderful weekend, enjoy the gorgeous weather, and put your worries away long enough to enjoy yourselves. As women, we consider “fun” to be the original “F-word.” Get over it.

All the best,
